Fresh creek gold rarely looks like the nuggets you see in dealer cases. It comes out of the pan with iron staining, clay film, and black-sand grit that dulls the shine. The good news: most gold cleans up beautifully with methods you can run at the kitchen sink — no acids, no mercury, nothing that will hurt you or the metal.
I clean every batch I bring home the same way, and it takes about twenty minutes of actual work. Here's the process.
Why You Shouldn't Reach for Chemicals First
Gold is chemically lazy — that's why it survives in a creek for a million years. The dirt on your gold is not bonded to it; it's just sitting on the surface. That means mechanical and soap-based cleaning gets you 95% of the way there with zero risk.
Strong chemistry (acid baths, dissolving and re-precipitating) has its place — but that place is refining, not cleanup. If your goal is display or selling raw gold, harsh cleaning can actually reduce value: collectors pay a premium for natural character, and an over-cleaned nugget looks treated.
Method 1: Dish Soap and a Soft Brush
The workhorse. This handles clay film and general grime on 90% of placer gold.
The golden rule: always work over a bowl, never over a drain. Gold that survives a million years in a creek can still vanish down your sink in half a second.
Method 2: The Rock Tumbler Trick
For a batch of small nuggets and pickers with stubborn staining:
The tumbling action burnishes the gold slightly, deepening the color. Don't overdo it — a full day of tumbling rounds off natural texture that collectors like.
Method 3: Ice Cream Salt and Vinegar (For Iron Staining)
Red-brown iron staining is the toughest non-chemical problem. Before you escalate, try this old-timer method — vinegar is a food-grade weak acid, nothing like the harsh stuff:
This dissolves the iron oxide film without touching the gold. If staining survives two rounds of this, it's likely locked in surface pores — at that point either accept the character or move to a proper refining process.

When Cleaning Isn't Enough: Real Recovery
Everything above is surface cleanup.
