Processing Black Sand Concentrates
Every prospector ends the season with the same thing: a bucket (or three) of black sand concentrates, heavy with magnetite and — if you did it right — laced with fine gold. Most people either rush the cleanup and blow fines out of the pan, or let the bucket sit in the garage for years. Both waste gold. Here's the systematic way to get every recoverable flake.
Understand What You're Holding
Black sand is mostly magnetite and hematite — iron minerals with a specific gravity around 5. Gold sits at 19.3. That 4x density difference is your lever for every separation step. The problem is that *fine* gold has huge surface area relative to weight, so water tension and static cling fight you harder as particles get smaller.
The cardinal rule: work in stages, save everything, and never process tailings down the drain. Keep every stage's discard in a labeled bucket until the whole batch is done.
Stage 1: Classify by Size
Separation only works on same-sized particles. Screen your concentrates through a stack:
Processing unclassified concentrates is the single biggest cause of fine-gold loss.
Stage 2: Magnetic Separation
Remove the magnetite — usually 60–80% of your volume:
Stage 3: Water Separation by Fraction
Panning (the 20+ mesh fractions)
Standard careful panning in a tub finishes the coarser fractions. Add a drop of dish soap (Jet Dry works too) to kill surface tension — this alone can double flour-gold retention.
Blue Bowl (50 and 100 mesh)
The blue bowl is the fine-gold workhorse — a centrifugal funnel where water spirals lighter material up and out while gold stays in the center hole.

When Concentrates Hold More Than Free Gold
If your district has gold locked in sulfides ("rusty" concentrates that pan heavy but show little color), mechanical separation hits a wall — the gold is chemically bound inside other minerals. Recovering it means crushing, roasting, or leaching processes: real chemistry with real safety requirements.
