Dry Washing in Desert Environments
Some of the richest placer ground in America sits in places where you couldn't fill a coffee cup from the nearest "creek." Arizona, Nevada, southern California, New Mexico β desert districts that produced tons of gold and still hold plenty, because most prospectors won't work without water. Dry washing is how you get that gold.
How Dry Washing Works
A drywasher separates gold from gravel using air and vibration instead of water. Material flows down an inclined riffle tray while air pulses up through a porous cloth bed. Light material bounces and blows down the tray; heavy gold settles against the riffles. It's a sluice that breathes.
Two main types:
Puffer (bellows) drywashers β hand-cranked or motorized bellows deliver discrete air pulses. Simple, light, quiet, and surprisingly effective. The classic starter machine
Blower drywashers β a gas or electric blower feeds continuous air through the bed. Higher throughput, better fine-gold recovery, more to haul and maintain
The One Rule That Decides Everything: Bone Dry
Dry washing only works on completely dry material. Even slightly damp dirt clumps, and clumped gold rides right over the riffles.
Dig in the heat of the afternoon, not the cool morning when ground moisture is up
Spread damp material on a tarp in the sun for a few hours before running it
After any rain, give the desert 3β5 days minimum
If material sticks together when you squeeze a handful, it's not ready
Half of successful dry washing is moisture management. The other half is digging in the right place.
Where Desert Gold Hides
Desert placers follow different rules than stream placers β there's no active water sorting them today, but ancient water put them there:
Dry washes and gulches β gold concentrates on bedrock and in gravel bars exactly like a wet creek, just on a flash-flood timetable
Caliche layers act as false bedrock β gold sits on top of them
Exposed bedrock in wash bottoms: crevice with hand tools and sweep with a vac or brush
Bench gravels above the current wash line β remnants of older channels
Around old workings β the old-timers' dumps and headings mark the pay streak; they left plenty of fines
Running a Drywasher Efficiently
Classify first β screen to 1/2" or 1/4" before it hits the tray; oversize kills recovery and throughput
Feed steadily, not in dumps β a thin, even flow keeps the bed working
Set the tray angle per the manual, then tune: gold climbing over riffles means too steep or too much air
Clean up often β every 30β60 minutes of running. Desert concentrates are heavy with magnetite and the riffles load up fast
Test your tailings β run a bucket of tailings through twice early in the day; if the second pass shows color, adjust before wasting a whole day
Finishing Desert Concentrates
You'll end the day with a bucket of rich, dry concentrate. Final separation options:
Take it home and pan it in a tub β the easy answer
Blue bowl or spiral wheel for volume (see Processing Black Sand Concentrates)
Skilled dry-panning works but expect to re-run everything at home anyway
Desert Safety Is Not Optional
The desert is less forgiving than any creek:
Water: one gallon per person per day minimum, plus reserve in the vehicle
Heat: work dawn hours in summer or choose the OctoberβApril season like the smart prospectors do
Tell someone exactly where you're going; desert districts have no cell coverage
Watch the sky upstream β a storm ten miles away can flash-flood your wash under blue sky
Snakes den in the same shady crevices you want to work; look before you reach
