Old computers, phones, and connectors contain real, recoverable gold. Learn what's worth processing, what to expect per pound, and how the recovery process actually works.

How to Recover Gold from Old Electronics

Every gold-capped CPU pin, every gold-plated connector edge, every bond wire inside a chip is real gold — deposited there because nothing else conducts as reliably without corroding. Multiply that by the mountain of e-waste America generates and you have what refiners call "urban ore." Gram for gram, a bin of vintage CPUs is richer than most commercial gold mines.

I got into electronics recovery during the off-season when the creeks were frozen, and it's become a year-round side of my prospecting. Here's an honest look at what's involved — including what the YouTube videos don't tell you.

What Actually Contains Gold

High-Yield Targets

  • Vintage CPUs (pre-1998) — ceramic Pentiums, 486s, and older can run 0.2–0.5 grams per chip. The all-time champions are 1960s–70s aerospace and military boards
  • Gold-capped and gold-lidded chips — visible gold on the package is always a good sign
  • CPU pins and socket connectors — heavy plating on every pin
  • RAM fingers ("edge connectors") — the visible gold stripes on memory sticks
  • Telecom boards — old switching equipment is consistently rich
  • Low-Yield (Usually Not Worth It)

  • Modern consumer CPUs — plating got dramatically thinner after 2000
  • Whole motherboards by the pound — mostly copper, tin, and fiberglass
  • Cables and household connectors — flash plating measured in millionths of an inch
  • What to Realistically Expect

    A pound of mixed RAM fingers yields roughly 0.3–0.7 grams of gold. A pound of vintage ceramic CPUs can yield 1.5–3 grams. At current spot prices that's real money — but only if your source material is cheap or free. Buying e-waste at eBay prices, where sellers already price in the gold content, is a losing game. The profit is in free and low-cost sources: business IT cleanouts, recycling days, estate sales, scrap from repair shops.

    How Recovery Actually Works

    There are two fundamentally different jobs: getting the gold-bearing parts off the boards (mechanical, safe, anyone can do it), and getting the gold out of those parts (chemistry, requires knowledge and respect).

    Stage 1: Harvesting (Safe, Start Today)

  • Collect and sort source material by grade — keep vintage separate from modern
  • Trim RAM fingers with shears; pull CPUs and socketed chips whole
  • Depopulate boards of gold-bearing connectors
  • Sort into lots: plated pins, fingers, ceramic chips, plastic chips
  • Good harvesting discipline is where most beginners fail. Mixed, ungraded material is worth a fraction of sorted lots — whether you process it yourself or sell it to a refiner.

    Stage 2: Concentration and Chemistry (Learn Before You Touch)

    Getting gold off fingers and pins means dissolving the base metal underneath the plating (copper/nickel), leaving gold foils — then dissolving and re-precipitating the gold itself for purity. Done right, you pour a clean button of 99%+ gold. Done wrong, you can create toxic gases, lose your gold into solution, or hurt yourself.

    I'm deliberately not putting recipe-level chemistry in a free web guide, because the difference between safe and dangerous here lives in the details: concentrations, temperatures, fume control, neutralization, and waste handling.     The No-Chemistry Alternative

    You can stop at Stage 1 and sell sorted material to a professional refiner. You'll get 70–85% of contained value with zero chemical risk. For many people that's the right trade — and sorted, graded lots command the best rates.

    Equipment You'll Want

  • Melting furnace — once you're producing gold powder or foils, you'll want to pour buttons. A small propane or electric furnace handles everything a hobbyist produces
  • Crucibles, tongs, and flux — the consumables of melting
  • A good scale — 0.01 gram resolution minimum; you're tracking small weights
  • Proper PPE — face shield, heavy gloves, and ventilation are non-negotiable around molten metal

  • Recovery chemistry at hobby scale is legal in most states, but waste disposal is regulated everywhere — you cannot pour metal-laden solutions down a drain
  • Neutralized, dried waste generally goes to household hazardous waste collection
  • If you scale up to buying material commercially, check state scrap-dealer licensing
  • Is It Worth It?

    If you enjoy process work and can source material cheap: absolutely — it's prospecting you can do in a garage in January. If you're buying material at market price hoping to profit on labor alone, your hourly rate will disappoint you. Like creek prospecting, the people who do well are the ones who enjoy the work itself and treat the gold as the bonus.
